Acetylcysteine
Drug description
This medication decreases the viscosity (thickness) of secretions in the eyes and lungs.
It also reduces the extent of damages to the animal's liver after swallowing acetaminophen (Tylenol®) or xylitol (type of sugar found in chewing gum).
Indications
In domestic animals, acetylcysteine is used:
- To decrease the thickness of secretions in the lungs and in the eyes.
- As an antidote for xylitol and Tylenol® poisoning.
Contraindications
Unless otherwise advised by the veterinarian:
- Do not use this medicine in an animal that has already taken it and has not responded well.
- It should also be used with caution in animals with certain bronchial disorders.
Side effects
This product may cause nausea, vomiting and, more rarely, hives (multitude of bumps that suddenly appear on the animal's body).
Recommended monitoring
The veterinarian might need to check the animal’s:
- liver enzymes blood levels;
- electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chlorine, etc.) blood levels;
- his hydration status.
