Preparing sprouts for your bird

How to

You must have good quality seed (avoid using the seed mixture of your bird).
Gather together the seeds with the same hardness.
Do not put too many seeds together so that you may allow for aeration.
Rinse well and allow to drain.

Soaking stage

Use a jar (jam type).
Add 3 tablespoons of your choice of seed.
Fill ¾ of the jar with water.*
Let soak. **
* water/seed ratio: The ratio will help you have a sufficient amount of water for the seeds. Always use 2 to 3 times more water than seed since they will swell during the process. The seed can never have too much water.

** The amount of time for soaking varies upon the type of seed. Mung broad beans and corn generally need a good 12 to 15 hours depending of the lot that is purchased. As for cereals of soft wheat and kamut type, 8 to 12 hours of soaking is necessary. This is the average for all seeds.

Rinsing stage

Rinse the seeds with fresh water
Drain well.
Return into jar.
Place the jar at an angle in order to facilitate draining and aeration.
Repeat the rinsing procedure every 12 hours until the majority of seed has sprouted and the stem is ¼ inches high.
About 36 to 48 hours depending of the seed and its freshness.
